Progression of Performance®

Most sales training stops at Practice and calls it mastery. That is not mastery. It is rehearsal with no consequence attached, and it evaporates the moment a real client sits down on the other side of the table.

Progression of Performance® (PoP®) is a registered behavioral training framework, developed by Dr. Tom Tonkin, Ph.D., built to close that exact gap: the distance between knowing a skill and reliably executing it under real conditions. It moves a learner through four distinct stages — Learn, Practice, Rehearse, Perform. Most programs never leave the second stage. PoP® is built to reach the fourth.

Most training stops here
01 Learn
Remember + Understand

States the skill and its purpose directly, setting objectives up front instead of leaving the learner to figure them out on the job.

02 Practice
Apply

Isolates the skill from the pressure of a live deal or a real client conversation. The learner builds it clean, then tests it.

03 Rehearse
Analyze + Evaluate

Reintroduces context and consequence. The learner runs the skill inside realistic scenarios and starts diagnosing, on their own, where it breaks down.

04 Perform
Create

Puts the skill to work in real client and sales situations, fully unscaffolded, and builds in structured reflection so the skill compounds instead of decaying.

When performance breaks down, PoP® treats the failure as evidence the prior stage ended too early. It never treats the failure as a reason to intervene at the stage where it surfaced.

This is not theory sitting in a slide deck. It is the operating model behind engagements that have moved new-rep ramp time from 14 months to 9, and rep tenure from 1.8 years to 3.6.

Grounded in the declarative-to-procedural memory model (Squire, 1992) and the revised Bloom’s Taxonomy (Anderson & Krathwohl, 2001), applied to sales and revenue-team behavior change.

Progression of Performance® is a registered service mark of Dr. Tom Tonkin.

Dr. Tom Tonkin applies PoP® as Principal of The Tonkin Group, a fractional sales leadership practice built for law firms, accounting practices, and IT consultancies.
